Project Overview

When vH1 reintroduced their popular series Pop Up Video in front of fans at Lollapalooza in August 2012, it was an instant hit. This revival of the classic 90s show where “info nuggets” would pop up and dominate the screen—displaying trivia or sarcastic comments—was recreated on a massive LED screen where fans could participate in real time videos with “Pop Ups.” This interaction helped reignite buzz about this iconic programming. Partnering with AWeSTRUCK marketing group, INPHANTRY deployed a unique augmented reality experience for festival attendees. Fans were given branded paddles that allowed the AR system to identify each person and their movement, which showcased back on the LeD screen with funny pop-up factoids such as, “Out of money,” “Hipster,” “Facebook me” and “Needs a ride.” The activation was a huge success at both Lollapalooza in Chicago, as well as at the mixtape Festival in Hershey, PA. The ability for fans to interact virtually with elements on a huge screen helped vH1 bring about nostalgia for Pop Up Video, while creating awareness about the revitalization of the show.
